フィリピン共和国ソルソゴン州は、ルソン島最南端に位置するビコール地方の州であり、州都であるSorsogon Cityは約18万人が暮らす地域の中心都市である。州全体では約84万人の人口を擁し、ビサヤ・ミンダナオ方面へ向かう交通の結節点としての役割も担っている。近年は都市開発や観光開発が進みつつある一方、市街地を離れると豊かな海や山々が広がり、多様な天然素材と伝統的なクラフト文化が今なお人々の暮らしの中に息づいている。本プロジェクトは、ソルソゴン地域で活動する8箇所のクラフト生産者コミュニティと協働し、地域資源を活かした新たな製品開発に取り組むものである。現地に根付く素材や技術を尊重しながら、これまでにない素材の活用方法や製品カテゴリーを提案することで、生産者の収入向上や技術継承、さらにはコミュニティの持続的な発展を目指している。デザインにおいては、素材そのものが持つ魅力や特性を最大限に引き出すことに加え、現地の生産環境に適した製造工程を構築することを重視している。美しさや独創性だけでなく、限られた設備や技術の中でも継続的に生産できること、製造負担を軽減しながら品質を向上させることも重要なテーマである。

 

2025年度後期には、造形総合Ⅱ類の授業として約30名の学生が参加した。授業では、現地から提供された素材に触れながら、フィリピンで活躍するプロダクトデザイナーによる講義や、生産者とのオンライン交流を通じて地域の文化や技術、課題について理解を深めた。その後、2～3名によるグループワークを行い、試作制作と検証を重ねながらプロトタイプの開発に取り組んだ。さらに、その中から10名の学生が国際交流プロジェクトとして2026年1月に6日間ソルソゴン州を訪問し、生産者と直接協働しながら試作品の改良を実施した。特に、生産工程の見直しや素材加工方法の検証を通じて、実際の製品化を見据えた提案へと発展させた。 この現地プロジェクトは、学生にとって異なる文化的背景を持つ生産者とどのように共創するのかを学ぶ貴重な機会でもあった。言語や慣習の違いに加え、必要な素材や道具が容易には入手できない環境の中で、現地の知恵や技術を活かしながら課題解決を図り、多くの壁を乗り越えていった。

 

本展示では、こうした国際協働によるデザイン実践の成果として生まれた作品を紹介する。展示作品は、地域の素材と技術、そして学生たちの新たな視点との出会いから生まれたものであり、デザインが地域社会の発展に果たし得る役割を示す試みである。

Sorsogon Province in the Republic of the Philippines is located in the Bicol Region at the southernmost tip of Luzon Island. Sorsogon City, the provincial capital, is the regional hub with a population of approximately 180,000. The province as a whole has a population of about 840,000 and serves as a transportation hub for travel to the Visayas and Mindanao regions. While urban and tourism development has been progressing in recent years, the areas outside the city limits are characterized by lush seas and mountains, where diverse natural materials and traditional craft culture continue to thrive in people’s daily lives. This project collaborates with eight craft producer communities active in the Sorsogon region to develop new products that utilize local resources. While respecting locally rooted materials and techniques, the project aims to increase producers’ incomes, preserve traditional skills, and foster the sustainable development of the community by proposing innovative ways to utilize materials and create new product categories. In terms of design, the project prioritizes not only bringing out the inherent charm and characteristics of the materials to the fullest but also establishing manufacturing processes suited to the local production environment. Key themes include not only beauty and originality but also the ability to sustain production even with limited equipment and technology, as well as improving quality while reducing the burden on manufacturers.

In the second semester of the 2025 academic year, approximately 30 students participated in the course as part of the Integrated Design II curriculum. During the course, students gained a deeper understanding of the region’s culture, techniques, and challenges by interacting with materials provided locally, attending lectures by product designers active in the Philippines, and engaging in online exchanges with producers. Subsequently, they worked in groups of two to three, developing prototypes through repeated prototyping and testing. Furthermore, 10 students from this group visited Sorsogon Province for six days in January 2026 as part of an international exchange project, where they worked directly with producers to refine their prototypes. In particular, by reviewing production processes and verifying material processing methods, they developed their proposals with a view toward actual commercialization. This on-site project also served as a valuable opportunity for students to learn how to co-create with producers from different cultural backgrounds. Facing language and cultural differences, as well as an environment where necessary materials and tools were not readily available, the students overcame many obstacles by solving problems while leveraging local wisdom and techniques.

This exhibition showcases the works created as the result of this international collaborative design practice. The exhibited works emerged from the convergence of local materials and techniques with the students’ fresh perspectives, and represent an effort to demonstrate the role that design can play in the development of local communities.
