Tree rings consist of the darker “heartwood” at the center and the lighter “sapwood” around it. In furniture making, these color variations and the boundary between them are often treated as negative elements that compromise the product’s uniformity and consistency, and are frequently cut away or concealed. Native is a chair designed around the organic lines created by nature, achieved by cutting the lumber along the boundary between the heartwood and sapwood. By moving away from designs that rely solely on the designer’s intent or measurements on a drawing, and instead designing in harmony with the material’s inherent natural qualities, the chair blurs the boundary between human artifice and nature.
